Relive the “great war” for one evening. The Toledo Jazz Orchestra will perform the music live in a stage reproduction of a World War II radio program. The program will be complete with war bulletins, old time commercials, singing, dancing and live performances of the music from the war. The host for the “broadcast” will be seasoned radio personality Bill Harris. The military songs and a few more surprises will be performed by Harold Lanning, a WWII veteran who performed in U.S.O. shows during the war. There will also be ballroom dancers from BGSU.
What about the music?
Musical selections will include songs from Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Count Basie and more. Some of the hits will include Woodchopper’s Ball, Take the A Train, One O’ Clock Jump, In The Mood, Pennsylvania 6-5000 (with the full band vocal), Stardust, I’ll Never Smile Again, String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade, Jersey Bounce and more.
Featured soloists from the band will include Mike Williams, lead trumpeter with the Count Basie Orchestra, trumpeter Dwight Adams from Stevie Wonder’s band, Toledo jazz giant Gene Parker, trombonist Scott Rogers, pianist Tad Weed, and several other members of the orchestra. Some area favorites performing in the group include Scott Potter, Jeff Halsey, and Mark Lemle.
