The Toledo Jazz Orchestra presents the Black & White Transportation Bistro Series at the Registry Bistro on Thursday, May 9 from 6:00 to 7:30, featuring the music of “Slim and Slam.”
Slim & Slam was a musical partnership in the late 30s and early 40s consisting of Bulee “Slim” Gaillard on guitar and Leroy Elliot “Slam” Stewart on bass. They produced novelty jazz numbers featuring Slim’s distinctive vocal style with vocalese and scats, hipster argot and nonsense words. Their biggest hit was “Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy Floy)”.
Chris Buzzeli, one of the Midwest’s finest guitarists, and Kevin Eikum, a bass player and singer of note, will be joined by TJO trumpeter Scott Potter in presenting the music, along with special guest Nick Muska, a local poet who will read short excerpts from literary works of the era. Also featured will be Fritz Byers, host of WGTE’s weekly Jazz Spectrum 91 program, who will provide anecdotes and historical narrative between tunes.
This very cool event takes place in cabaret style at Registry Bistro, 144 N. Superior St. in downtown Toledo.
Ticket cost is $33 and includes light hors d’oeuvres. Dinner reservations for after the no-intermission show can be made at Registry Bistro by calling 419-725-0444, and tickets for the show are available at THIS LINK or by calling the Valentine Theatre Box Office at 419-242-2787.
