Grammy-Nominated Composer & Trumpet Soloist Tim Hagans becomes the new Artistic Director of the TJO

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

The Toledo Jazz Orchestra announced that three-time Grammy-nominated composer, conductor and trumpeter Tim Hagans will become it’s new Artistic Director for the orchestra’s upcoming 2020-2021 Season. Tim Hagans performs and records with the Tim Hagans Quartet (Blue Note, Palmetto & Waiting Moon Records) and as a guest composer, conductor and soloist with the NDR Bigband in Hamburg Germany, as well as many other large ensembles. For fifteen years he was Artistic Director and composer-in-residence for the Norrbotten Big Band, a jazz orchestra based in Sweden that toured Europe and featured guest artists such as Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker and Dave Liebman.

Hagans explains: “I am elated to be leading the Toledo Jazz Orchestra. I am familiar with the band’s long and impressive history, and I know many of these great musicians who have performed with the orchestra for years. I recognize that the Toledo Jazz Orchestra is a vital part of a vibrant arts scene in Toledo and I am excited about possibilities for programming and community engagement.”

Hagans continues: “Jazz music is like a great wave in the ocean, ever changing and evolving, sometimes wild and untamed and sometimes calm and soothing. To be a part of a jazz orchestra is to be on a voyage of adventure; I’m looking forward to us riding the waves together.”

Toledo Jazz Orchestra Board President Scott Potter adds: “We are all very pleased and excited that Tim has taken the role of Artistic Director with our orchestra. His passion for the music and vision for its capacity to reach a greater and more diverse audience are inspiring.”

Tim Hagans was nominated for Grammy awards for Best Instrumental Composition for “Box of Cannoli” from THE AVATAR SESSIONS (2010 Fuzzy Music); Best Contemporary Jazz CD for REANIMATION (2000 Blue Note) and ANIMATION/IMAGINATION (1999 Blue Note). He is the featured soloist on the soundtrack for the movie The Score starring Robert DeNiro and featuring a score by Howard Shore. Tim Hagans is the music director for the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble, a performing ensemble of contemporary dance and music that integrates the musicians into the visual stage imagery.

Hagans will begin with the Toledo Jazz Orchestra’s upcoming 2020/2021 season while also maintaining an international performing schedule.
